How to Prevent Car Key Relay Theft in Dubai

You lock your keyless car, walk inside, and go to sleep. Overnight, thieves drive it away without breaking a window or touching your key. This is relay theft, and it targets exactly the convenience that makes smart keys so nice to live with.

The good news is that stopping it is cheap and simple. Here is how the trick works and what you can do about it, starting tonight.

Your smart key constantly broadcasts a short-range radio signal, waiting for your car to ask for it. Thieves exploit this with two small devices: one held near your front door or window to pick up your key's signal, and another held near your car to relay it.

The car thinks the key is right next to it, so it unlocks and allows the engine to start. The whole thing takes under a minute, makes no noise, and leaves no damage. The thieves simply drive away.

This only works on cars with keyless entry and push-button start. If you have to press a button on the fob or turn a key in the ignition, relay theft does not apply to you.

A faraday pouch is a small bag lined with metal mesh that blocks radio signals. Drop your key inside, and the signal cannot get out. No signal, no relay, no theft. They cost very little and are sold online and in electronics shops across the UAE.

Test yours when it arrives: put the key in the pouch, walk up to your locked car, and try the door handle. If the car stays locked, the pouch works. Test it every few months, because the lining can wear out with daily use.

Get one for every smart key in the household, including the spare. A spare key sitting unprotected in a drawer is just as vulnerable as the one in your pocket.

Distance is your friend. Keep your keys as far from the front door, windows, and anywhere a car might be parked as you can. A bedroom at the back of the villa or a high apartment floor is far better than a bowl by the entrance.

Avoid the classic key bowl by the front door entirely. It is convenient for you and convenient for a thief standing outside with a relay device. Move the keys deeper into the home.

If you do not have a faraday pouch yet, even a metal tin with a lid helps in a pinch. It is not as reliable as a proper pouch, but it weakens the signal considerably. Consider it a stopgap, not a solution.

Where you park matters. A car in a locked private garage is a much harder target than one on an open street or in an unsecured basement parking area. Use your garage if you have one.

In shared parking buildings, choose well-lit spots near cameras and foot traffic. Thieves prefer dark corners where they can work unseen. It will not stop a determined relay attack, but it raises their risk.

A visible steering-wheel lock is an excellent second layer. Even if thieves relay your key signal and start the engine, they cannot drive away quickly with a lock on the wheel. Most will move on to an easier target.

Many people protect their daily key and forget the spare sitting in a kitchen drawer. Relay devices do not care which key they catch. Every smart key for the car needs the same protection.

Store spare keys in a faraday pouch too, or in a metal box deep inside the home. Tell everyone in the household the rule: keys go in the pouch, every time.

Signs of a relay attempt are subtle: your car unlocked overnight without explanation, or a neighbor's camera caught strangers lingering near parked cars with a bag or device in hand.

If you suspect an attempt, report it to Dubai Police on 901 for non-emergencies, or 999 if a theft is in progress. A report creates a record that helps police spot patterns in your area.

Then tighten your routine the same day: keys into faraday pouches, spares secured, and consider adding a steering-wheel lock. Most relay thieves move on once a street stops being easy.
