Documents Required for Car Key Replacement in the UAE

By the Car Key Programming Dubai technician team · Last updated 10 October 2026

Before any reputable locksmith makes you a car key, they will ask for documents. This surprises some people, but it is one of the clearest signs you are dealing with a professional rather than someone who will cut a key for anyone who asks.

Here is exactly what you need in the UAE, why each document matters, and what to do if your paperwork is locked inside the car.

Have your documents ready? Our Car key replacement in Dubai team verifies ownership on arrival and gets straight to work.

Why we check documents at all

A car key is, in practical terms, the ability to drive your car away. Handing one to the wrong person would be helping with theft, plain and simple. Checking ownership protects you as much as it protects us.

It also protects you from liability. If a key to your car ever turned up in the wrong hands, you would want to know the locksmith verified the person they gave it to.

So when we ask for your ID and registration, we are not being difficult. We are doing the job properly, the way the law and basic decency require.

Your Emirates ID

Your Emirates ID proves who you are. We check that the name on it matches the name on the vehicle registration, or that you have a legitimate connection to the registered owner.

Have the physical card or the official digital version ready when our technician arrives. A photo of someone else's ID is not enough, and we will not proceed on a promise that documents are coming later.

If you are collecting the key on behalf of the owner, bring your own Emirates ID plus proof of your relationship to the owner or their written authorization.

Your Mulkiya (vehicle registration card)

The Mulkiya proves the car is registered and shows who it is registered to. It also carries the VIN and plate details we use to confirm we are working on the right vehicle.

Keep it somewhere you can reach it. Many people keep the Mulkiya in the glove box, which is a problem when the car is locked and the keys are lost. Consider keeping a photo of it on your phone as a backup.

The registration should be current. If it has expired, we can usually still proceed, but renewing it with the RTA is something you should not put off anyway.

Company cars and rental cars

If the car is registered to a company, bring proof that you are authorized to act for it: a company letter, your employee ID alongside your Emirates ID, or the trade paperwork that links you to the business.

For rental cars, the rental agreement is the key document. It shows you are the authorized driver. We will also want your Emirates ID and, where relevant, your driving licence.

Fleet managers: if you run several vehicles, keeping a simple authorization letter on file for your drivers saves time on every callout. Ask us what wording works and we will suggest a format.

What if your documents are locked in the car?

This happens all the time with all-keys-lost jobs: the Mulkiya is in the glove box and the car is locked. Tell us upfront and do not worry.

We can open the car with professional entry tools first, without damage. You retrieve your documents from inside, we verify them, and then we continue with cutting and programming the new key.

What we cannot do is skip the check entirely. If there is genuinely no way to prove ownership, we will have to wait until you can produce the documents. No honest locksmith will work without them.

Do you need a driving licence too?

Your driving licence is helpful but not the key document. The Emirates ID proves identity and the Mulkiya proves the car's registration, and those two cover what we need in almost every case.

That said, having your licence handy never hurts, especially for rental cars where the agreement names the authorized driver. If you have it, bring it along.

If your licence is expired or you are waiting on a renewal, do not worry. It does not block the key job. The Emirates ID and Mulkiya are what matter.

What about keys for a car you just bought?

Just bought a used car and only got one key? Bring the transfer paperwork or the new Mulkiya in your name along with your Emirates ID. That proves the car is now yours.

This is actually the perfect time to get a spare made. You are already thinking about the car, and a second key now is far cheaper than an emergency later.

If the previous owner's keys are still programmed to the car, ask us to erase them during the visit. It is a quick step that means only your keys will ever start it.

A quick checklist before we arrive

To keep your visit smooth, have these ready: your Emirates ID, your Mulkiya or a clear photo of it, and for company or rental cars, the authorization letter or rental agreement.

Know your car's exact make, model, and year, and tell us whether any key still works. That one detail changes the equipment we bring.

Make sure the car is accessible: parking level, bay number, and any gate codes we need to reach it. In Dubai's bigger communities, a location pin on WhatsApp saves everyone time.

That is it. No forms to fill in, no accounts to create. We verify, we work, you test, you pay. Simple as that.

What documents do I need for car key replacement in Dubai?

Your Emirates ID and your Mulkiya (vehicle registration card). Company cars need company authorization paperwork, and rentals need the rental agreement.

Why does a locksmith need my Emirates ID?

To verify you are who you say you are and that you have a legitimate claim to the car. It is a standard anti-theft check every professional locksmith performs.

My Mulkiya is locked inside the car. What now?

Tell us when you book. We open the car first with non-destructive entry tools, you retrieve your documents, we verify them, and then we make the key.

Can someone else get a key made for my car?

Only with proper authorization: their own Emirates ID plus your written authorization or proof of their relationship to you as the registered owner.

Do you keep copies of my documents?

We only check your documents to verify ownership at the time of the job. We do not need to keep copies, and we do not ask for anything beyond what the job requires.
